Amy sawyers-williams, she/her
see saw Projects founder & director
Amy Sawyers-Williams is a multidisciplinary, community-based artist: an applied theatre practitioner, storyteller, improv comedian, creative writer, and mother. Since 2002, she has created work and deeply rooted herself in the arts communities of Chicago, IL; Madison, WI; New York City; and now Raleigh-Durham, NC.
She earned her Master’s in Applied Theatre from CUNY, where she trained in devised performance, Theatre of the Oppressed (TO), immersive Theatre-In-Education (TIE), and worked as a teaching artist in NYC public schools. Amy has co-created, devised, and directed numerous original performances and workshops with diverse communities, with her work featured both locally and nationally.
In 2017, she founded See Saw Projects to bring applied theatre practices to communities across North Carolina. Through this initiative, Amy has led performance-based projects with incarcerated individuals at Wake Correctional, elders in memory care at the Durham Center for Senior Life and Croasdale, young people, and neurodiverse young adults.
Most recently, she served as an artist-in-residence at the Nasher Museum in partnership with Dr. Sara Wilbur’s Artist in Healthcare course at Duke University. There, she guided participants in “living poetry” sessions—using museum objects to inspire the creation and embodiment of haiku poems.
In addition to her applied theatre work, Amy performs as an improv comedian at Comedy Worx with their flagship team, Capital City Culture Club. With 16 years of improv training and teaching experience, she brings spontaneity, joy, and adaptability into every space she facilitates.
